Media Evaluation (Title Sequence)

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Before producing a media product,I had researched and planed into the forms and conventions of real media products similar to our title sequence. As the title sequence was developed, I referred to the typical forms and conventions, thus producing a media product. Our title sequence "Change the Beat" is hybrid genre made up of dance, tragedy and an element of romance. The narrative is based on the main characters life (Frankie) and how he copes with his disability, whilst aspiring to be a dancer.Frankie is unable the way he used to because of his back injury causing him to break his spine in his early years. He eventually finds a way to continue following his career ,whilst in a wheelchair, through helping others who are in similar situation.

Our media product portrays this narrative, whilst incorporating the media codes and conventions in the sequence.Throughout the title sequence, elements of dance themed codes and conventions were incorporated into the scenes to create an idea, that it has something to do with dance/movement, whilst acknowledging the genre and narrative but without giving too much away. The various camera angles, shots and movement also give an edgy effect of "change the beat" with the sound and the Mise-en-scene(Costume,props,sound,make-up & lighting) it keeps the sequence, modern & fresh whilst keeping the audience interested. Props:remote, wheelchair, xray, shirt & tie.Sound:hip-hop style dance music and sound for the main character(Frankie)Lighting:natural daylight.
The typography is bright, fast paced and represents the dance aspect of the sequence because the colour gold portrays winning/reaching your goals, making it in life.Which is what this film is about and the message that we are trying to get to the audience. The anchorage between the titles and the narrative was made easier once we knew the message we wanted to echo in the sequence.I aso felt that the continuity of the sequence was shown well, which obviously linked the story together, preventing confusion.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

The target audience we chose to target, was an group from 15-24.We felt that young people would preferable like to watch contemporary/modern dance and from research most young people have free time in the summer break,an ideal time to release a movie. They also have more disposal income.I think that this age group can somewhat identify with the storyline ,characters and relate it to their on lives because of the whole theme about mistakes leading to problems and making yourself out of nothing linking the idea of "Change the Beat" which relates to changing your path or lifestyle.I also feel that this social group are represented in "Change the Beat" title sequence because I have Incorporated young actors, which I felt portrayed the narrative well,by making it easier for the audience to relate to the characters, thus creating a relationship with the audience whilst representing the group in a way that is understandable. The representations of young people in "Change the Beat" is shown in a positive way,by giving the impression that they are not lazy or bound by their problem. They are ambitious, lively and in control of their life, which means they can take action and change their lives for the better in so many ways even if it seems impossible. The narrative presents this social group as believers, open minded, having faith and hope in life. This may change the perception of this social group and create an understanding with others, therefore making Young people feel like they are not alone, whilst encouraging young people. The title sequence would also capture the eyes of this age group because from research this group has many interests, hobbies and lifestyle issues(background information) that could possibly determine their decision in whether or not to view this energetic, fun dance with an element of romance and tragedy film.I feel that the narrative was expressed well through the various forms of camera angles, shots and mise-en-scene.

The sequence represents gender in a positive way, suggesting that no matter what gender you are you have the freedom to choose the path you want and live the live you want.In our sequence a strong white male is represented as determinate and motivated. The targeted age group is between 15-24 because the representations, we were hoping to portray were an ambitious, energetic and lively side to a young person's life.a group that is ready to face any changes that come their way;for the better or the worst. A negative representation of disability is shown in the sequence because the character is seen looking unhappy in his situation, the fact that someone helps him portrays that people with disabilities need assistance, however a positive side to this is that he has the choice and freedom to move where ever and when ever he wants.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

As a group we researched media institutions that may distribute our media product. We came to a conclusion that Paramount pictures was the best institutions for our product because they are well known (Part of the Big six)and distribute popular teen movies based on romance/dance/tragedy such as (save the last dance, dance flick, step up,footloose etc.)which are aimed at our target market. This means that our movie would fit in and sell well with this media institution.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

The 15-24 year old target market would be the audience for "Change the beat"media product because they are best suited for this movie and the narrative could possibly relate to them. This is shown through the Mise-en-scene that is used in the movie. The characters are roughly the same age as the audience, making it easier for them to connect on this level. Myself and my group did some research before creating "Change the beat".We found that dance films were really were popular with this age group. For example step up,you got served and so on.

How did you attract/address your audience?

I think that we have reached/ attracted/addressed our audience through the construction of our new film idea. This is a good way of attracting an audience because it creates interest and excitement for something they haven't seen before.I think that in planning this film idea ,we thought about the type of sound/music that would appeal to our target. We also thought about the transitions and camera shots that enhanced the images in the sequence.I also believe that using characters similar to the audience, did help draw their attention because they can easily relate to their age group. From the feedback my group received;the audience felt that the music went well with dance scene. However the thought improvements needed to be done on the camera angles and the wheelchair movements in the other scenes. Also the audience commented on the wheelchair music and said it was too country and exciting,so we changed it too a more soothing and calm sound to suit the main character (Frankie) This was eventually improved and now the audience thinks that it's much better.

Overall,The sequence draws the audience in from the opening scene, when the main character dances before the accident happens. This draws the audience in because of the performance element. The character expresses himself in a creative way, giving the audience something fun and entertaining to enjoy;a story told through dance rather than orally, in order to intrigue the audience. We were able to fulfill the audience expectation because we knew the style of dance popular amongst that target audience.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

The technologies used were the Mac's,whereby programmes such as final cut pro, imovie and photo shop software were used.I used final cut pro to edit "Change the Beat" title sequence to get a better quality and a more professional look. At first final cut pro was proving difficult to use, only because i hadn't used it in quite a while. As we experienced with final cut pro we eventually got a hang of it.I think that I learnt a range of new editing skills, new ways of editing. In the end I felt that I had edited the sequence to the best of my ability with the help and input from my team members.IMovie software was used to put our storyboard photos on to make a video as an example for how the final one would look like.I found imovie easier than final cut pro.Photo shop was quite a challenge at first but after reading the instructions and practicing on the software,it did become less challenging and more useful. We used photo shop to edit our production logo and chest xray picture.I learnt that using final cut pro was very useful, productive and better to use when editing footage. The only I would want is more transitions and a better way/tool for making the title look effective.

Over all,the process of filming to editing is a necessity of ensuring that the right shots/angles and limitations as well as the capabilities of final cut pro are done in the production process.I have learnt that the technologies are quite complex and difficult but once you have the skills needed, the production process becomes so much easier.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

I have learnt that when it comes to filming I should voice my opinions more often because this could determine whether or not we get it right,in terms of making the sequence look more professional by adding more camera angles and shots. Also I have learnt that it is better to film everything in the daylight because it is difficult to edit poor lit footage on final cut pro.It is also a better idea to keep the camera steady and fixed well on the tripod to create a good effect when filming.Another thing I have learnt is that I shouldn't rely on actors or team members sometimes because they can deceive/let you down. For example actors arriving late or members not attending or bringing important equipment. This has taught me to plan ahead by having a back up plan if all goes wrong next time. Finally I have learnt to use my editing skills to improve the sequence and use constructive criticism to get a better outcome.

After doing the continuity sequence,I have seen the progress that I have made and was able to apply my skills and knowledge from the continuity sequence task to Change the beat title sequence. This task tested myself and my groups continuity editing skills and knowledge.I think that most of the skills learnt should have been implemented into change the beat sequence.

Target Audience

The target audience research sheets questionnaires above, were given to an audience aged between 15-25,a group we had chosen to target. The questions were based on the type of film genre liked and why.Overall the most popular genre chosen was dance, whilst thriller, horror, sci-fi and romance were picked the least. The target audience questionnaire gave our group an idea of who might be interested in the dance genre chosen for our title sequence.Once we knew our target audience,we were able to research into film genres of that particular age group and found that dance was a popular genre, which we thought could incorporate a lot of contemporary ideas, that could help make our "Change the Beat" title sequence appeal to our audience. The feedback showed that people enjoyed watching upbeat movies with an urban vibe and a storyline in which the audience could relate to.The dance element of the film was a way of showing how young people express themselves nowadays, suggesting and encouraging people to experience and enjoy the opportunities of life;a message that is portrayed in the sequence.

"Change the Beat" title sequence

This is our final title sequence for Change the Beat.It has been re-edited and improved.

Media Journal-Week 15

This week,Myself and Yasmin did as much as we could to improve our title sequence. For most of the days Yasmin was busy,so I focused on editing the titles. It proved difficult a first because I couldn't seem to find any exciting transitions for the titles.Yasmin and I also discussed changing the title font because our original title did not appeal to our audience.I tried out several types of fonts on Dadont.com,but it seemed difficult to find the right one and the transitions on final cut pro seemed limited.

On Friday, myself and Yasmin stay after school to put the finish touches on the sequence to make it look better. This took us about 2 hours to do,but eventually we had completed the editing,by compromising the typography and the transitions.I then uploaded the video on to YouTube for feedback. At first I thought the sequence wouldn't have been completed because of the lack of time and numerous problems with re shooting. But now I am happy that it is improved and completed.

Our final task we were given to do,was to complete an evaluation for our title sequences.Myself and Yasmin discussed some of the questions and started them on Thursday. Some of the questions were challenging but in the end,we understood what they were asking for.I also did a write up on the production logo and audience questionnaires.

Feedback forms

These are the are the feedback forms we received from our class during the screening of the title sequence.A range of views have been expressed and we have taken these comments into consideration and will be adding them to our sequence.

After receiving these feedback forms,I had cometo a realisation, that major changes needed to be made on our production work.I thought about the way in which we had presented the seqeunce.Myself and my group scheduled a day to refilm in order to get better camera shots and angles to improve the cinematography within the sequence. The feedback helped our group because it highlighted the main problems we needed to focus on in order to produce a successful sequence.Unfortunately due to actors cancelling scheduled filmed time,we were unable to fix most of the problems to ensure that our title sequence was at a high standard.

Production logo

Jump productions is our production name,we brainstormed a few names and finally decided to use this name because we thought it was simple and fitted well with the theme of movement/dance.The shoes were chosen, because they represented our genre (dance). The typography is kind of slick and smooth. It has been neatly done and it looks quite professional.

Media Journal-Week 14

This week Our group found out that Rebbecca(Becky) dropped out of media, therefore only myself and Yasmin and Jasmine will be in the group. On Tuesday jasmine was absent,so we had do things without her.Even though the deadline is very close me and Yasmin had to think and discuss alternatives for our title sequence because the dance scenes were poorly shot.At one point we thought about producing a whole new title sequence, but unfortunately we have limited time on our hands.Another option,a simplifier, this we can use to make the sequence less complicated technically and story wise.

Ms Whittaker previewed the title sequence and also gave positive and constructive feedback for us to work on. She gave me good ideas on how to present the dance scene coherently.I think that editing the sequence with advise from Ms Whittaker has added to my editing skills.I feel like I have learnt more techniques, which will help me in the future.

On Friday, I went to visit another location (YMCA)whereby , youth could fill in for absent actors in our sequence.Unfortunately I was unable to make it due to timing and transport issues.I then decided to go today(Sunday) which was also another problem because when I got there the YMCA centre was closed. On Friday and Saturday I had contacted them with different contacts on a number of occasions but there was no response.I then contacted Yasmin and told her the problems that I was having but ,Yasmin herself was stuck for a solution.Next week I will ask Ms Whittaker for advise and alternatives since myself and Yasmin feel like there is no way out of this situation.

Typography questionnaires

Here are the two questionnaires filled out,in order to find out our target market for Change the beat. There was a range of mixed feedback. This may be due their age, gender, personality, an so on.

As you can this questionnaire was filled in by a 9 year old, therefore her needs are different from an average 16 or 17 year old person. In this questionnaire the participant put the the titles in order of most favourite and least favourite. Title.E. was chosen as the best typography for change the beat, whilst Title.A. was chosen as the most unsuitable.
I think that this person chose this because children like to see patterns, therefore she was more drawn to title.E &D.She mentioned that D&E were very close to each other, proving that title appeals to that market.

From this questionnaire you can see that what this teen prefers ,is what we would offer, which means we know our audience. This person felt that Title.E. was the best title for Change the Beat because she liked the look of the font.

This person also prefers comedies and adventure, which shows they are fun loving and adventurous and like to try out new things.I think that this show that "Change the beat" would suit them just because it has that fun, exciting aspect to it.

Media Journal-Week 13

In media ,this week my group and I focused on editing the sequence.I did most of the editing this week, because most of my group were unwell this week (Yasmin and Becky),therefore myself and Jasmin focused on editing.I added a few effects to make the sequence flow better.

I had problems with the titles and the positioning of them on final cut pro,I then tried different techniques by positioning titles and adding transitions to them. I think that I did quite a lot of editing this week and I feel like I've made a lot a progress on the sequence and on my blog. I also gave out the questionnaires last week and this week.I have received a range of feedback from various people.I also asked a few people what they thought of our titles sequence. Most of the people I asked thought that it was quite good. Some people thought that the main title needed more improvements,so I took that to consideration.

On Friday,we had to screen our sequence in front of our class. I had anticipated this moment because,I realised that our group needed constructive criticism to better improve "Change the beat "title sequence.I was happy that we also received positive feedback;motivating us to work harder on the sequence. The only suggestion I thought was going to bring the group down on was the fact that our teacher thought that re filming was needed.I think that re filming scenes will be another long process, later reducing our time for editing.Overall I think it needs to be done because we need a range of different angles shot especially for,the dance scene.

Thursday 2 February 2012

Media Journal-Week 12

My group and I continued editing Change the Beat title sequence. The editing was done by Becky and myself because Yasmin and Jasmine were absent for a couple of days. When they were present they gave us good feedback, this helped because we had different views on the sequence.

We initially had planned to film with Becky's boyfriend in the park, unfortunately he was ill and this is the last week we can film. Our last hope was Plan B to find someone in our school who could dance to help us with our project. We finally found a year 11 student names Shane, who was kind enough to help us.

The filming process was done after we had filmed the dance scene.we were happy with the outcome and incorporated it into the sequence with the music. Yasmin and myself edited the production logo and the positioning of the scenes. We all gave feedback, some, more than others.Yasmin also thought the music needed to be altered,so we both thought the should be a build up towards from the beginning to end.I also wasn't particularly sure about the Main title because I felt it looked a bit amateur, but the group seemed to disagree,so it was left the way it was.I also felt that we did get a good amount of angles on the dance scene;due to lack of time it had to be left alone. Also next week Tuesday will be screening day, were everybody in our media class watches the title sequence and gives feedback on it.

Saturday 28 January 2012

Media Journal-Week 11

This week I focused on editing the wheelchair scenes for Change the Beat title sequence. This week we have to re-film the dance because the lighting in the other sequence was quite poor. There were a few problems when it came to editing the wheelchair scene, due to the slow Apple Mac computer we were using. We also decided to edit the next day which was much better because we were able to make progress, even though we had lost what was edited. Another issue with the editing was trying to cut out certain parts to make the sequence smoother. It took many attempts, but it was proving difficult.I then decided to put an effect in between which made it look a bit better.

I think the sequence will be done by the deadline Friday 10th February, but we still need to film the dance scene for the first part of the sequence. This has been a problem recently because the actors have been absence for number of reasons.I also uploaded other alternative tunes for the sequence incase the original music didn't work with the sequence.

Location shots (recce)

Here are the images of the park and inside the house. The park location was used for the Dance scenes, whilst the house was used for the main characters (Frankie) wheelchair scene. As you can see, they are very clear shots of the location.Which conveys the atmosphere it gives. The park seems peaceful and clean, and the house has the props and scenery needed for the wheelchair scene.

Media Journal-Week 10

This week, myself and the group scheduled our filming days for Thursday 19th January and Friday 20th January. When it came to filming on Thursday,Jasmine was unable to attend due to her illness. The filming took place at park in woolwich around 3pm.There were many problems that we had to face; the fact that only one actor/dancer turned up at 3pm.This was a problem because we had a filming schedule and time was running out.The actors/dancers turned up between 4:45pm to 5:30pm.The issue with this time was that filming became inefficient due to the natural lighting disappearing, making it difficult to clearly see the shots taken.

Another issue that made the day even more difficult and stressful was the fact that some of the dancers had to go home and get their costumes. At this point,I became frustrated and almost gave up.However,I knew we had to get something on film. Therefore I tried to speed things up by firstly directing the dancers, in terms of the position, I wanted them to stand in for each shot. This also became an issue because the dancers were reluctant to move. After that situation the dancers then found it hard to portray the kind of vibe we wanted, because the background dancers were not enthusiastic or energetic enough.

The angles shot by Yasmin were also inefficient, this may have been because we were in a hurry. She only shot the dance scene from two angles;in front and a side angle. I think that we should have shot the sequence from three different angles to make the sequence coherent.Unfortunately Yasmin didn't take into account the shots we had planned to shoot.I think if she had listened to what myself and Becky were saying, progress would have been made. In the end the shots produced were too dark, therefore the plan is to film next week Tuesday after school.

On the next day, we filmed at Becky's house which I think went better than Thursday's filming. We were able to film in the amount of time we had scheduled. The only problem was the last couple shots involving the wheelchair leaving the narrow hall way.The scenes with the main character were quick and easy because he understood, what we wanted and delivered a good performance.

Filming Location (Permisson Letter)

A letter for permission to film at Woolwich poly school to find out wheter or not we can use the dance space and the dance members,to film our title sequence.Since Becky has close relations with someone that attends ,dance classes in that school. The letter was signed by Mr Grimsley,to make sure that we had permission to send the letter. If we are unable to use this location; other alternatives will be used such as the dance studio in our school.

Media journal-Week 9

This week,I focused on completing tasks for our title sequence. As a group we created a PowerPoint on Paramount;our chosen studio logo for Change the Beat title sequence.I created a questionnaire to research our target audience and to find out the type of font the audience preferred, for Change the Beat genre.I also put up the storyboards and discussed the possible location and shoots that should be used for the sequence.
This week we had to cancel filming for Friday, coming up due to Becky's illness; however a decision was made to start filming the following Friday.Becky assured the group she would be in,and plus it is imperative that each member of the group attends the making of the sequence. The main problem was that Becky's house was the main location, because she had the main props, costumes and space we needed. After we solved the shooting schedule problem, film shots and location recce shots were discussed to ensure that progress would be made within the next week Thursday and Friday. Overall I hope that after shooting we will have enough time to edit the shoots in time for the deadline ,without any problems or issues.

Music/Sound

Music/sound research and final soundtrack decision.

I have decided that this is the type of music that will be suitable for Change the beat title sequence because they both seem to have the vibe we are looking for.Big Boss will be for the dancing in the sequence.Perfection will be used when it comes to the main character (Frankie)in the wheelchair.

Big boss soundtrack:
http://www.audionetwork.com/production-music/big-boss_23163.aspx
This tune has a urgent, powerful urban RnB groove type of vibe that will need in the title sequence because it will add to the sequence;with its powerful sound and urban feel, which would portray the titles genre. This will set a strong tone and mood for the title sequence.

Heaven cent soundtrack:
https://audionetwork.lgfl.org.uk/production-music/heaven-cent_13319.aspxWest coast
This tune has RnB/hip hop with repetitive piano & strings. This soundtrack I have chosen will be used as a back up,alternative incase we are unable to use the other soundtrack;Big boss.

Perfection soundtrack:

Change the Beat (storyboards)

These are the storyboards created for the title sequence (Change the Beat). Every scene has been drawn. Although the feedback given, was to include images of dancing before an image of the injury. The title sequence will take a maximum of two minutes, which I think is an appropriate time for a title sequence.Over all, the storyboard plan will be used when it comes to filming. The two locations are Becky's house for the wheelchair scenes and a Dance school for the dance scenes.

Media journal- Week 8

This week, myself and my group focused on completing the storyboards and producing an animatic to put on our blogs.Making the storyboard into an animatic gave us an idea of how it would look like and how long the title sequence would be.I also created a calendar to jot down the days that we were planning to film and all the necessary things we have done in order for our project to run smoothly. Our decision ,this week is to film every friday evening because that is the only time our actors are free to participate in our title sequence filming. We also decided that we would do the location recce shots on fridays. I briefly discussed the sound/music for the sequence, as we need an alternative because the recent sound/music that was suggested had copyright on it.
